چکیده

The formal semantics of speech acts, even in the classical framework of illocutionary logic, requires considerations that go beyond individual speech activity and beyond the interpretation of individual sentences. We show how the formal semantics of speech acts can be extended to take into account the social effects and interactive aspects of illocutionary activity. To illustrate our approach, we focus on the semantics of assertions and descriptive discourse, contrasting the individual aspect of speaker’s meaning and the epistemic effects of assertion making. The approach presented in this paper generalizes to all other types of illocutionary acts, adding specific content to the conversational record that registers the common ground of speakers and hearers as

Pragmatic Representations in Iranian High School English Textbooks

Owing to the growing interest in communicative, cultural and pragmatic aspects of second language learning in recent years, the present study tried to investigate representations of pragmatic aspects of English as a foreign language in Iranian high school textbooks. Using Halliday’s (1978), and Searle’s (1976) models, different language functions and speech acts were specifically determined and...

Three Ways to Avoid Commitments: Declarative Force Modifiers in the Conversational Scoreboard

We discuss three English markers that modify the force of declarative utterances: reverse-polarity tags (Tom’s here, isn’t he?), same-polarity tags (Tom’s here, is he?), and rising intonation (Tom’s here?). The differences among them are brought out especially clearly in dialogues with taste predicates (tasty, attractive) and vague scalar predicates applied to borderline cases (red for an orang...

Formal semantics of speech acts for argumentative dialogues

In this paper, we give formal semantics to speech acts for argumentative dialogues in the context of an agent-oriented programming language. Our approach to giving formal semantics to such speech acts uses operational semantics and builds upon existing work that provides computationally grounded semantics for agent mental attitudes such as beliefs and goals.

Efficiency in Persuasion Dialogues

Inquiry, Persuasion and Deliberation Dialogues are all designed to transfer information between agents so that their beliefs and opinions may be revised in the light of the new information, and all make use of a similar set of speech acts. These dialogues also have significant differences. We define success conditions for some different dialogue types in this family and note the pragmatic impli...

A common ontology of agent communication languages: Modeling mental attitudes and social commitments using roles

There are two main traditions in defining a semantics for agent communication languages, based either on mental attitudes or on social commitments. These traditions share speech acts as operators with preconditions and effects, and agents playing roles like speaker and hearer, but otherwise they rely on distinct ontologies. They refer not only to either belief and intention or various notions o...
